During the early years of the current decade steel production increased quite dramatically. World crude steel production rose from 905 million tonnes in 2002 to over 1.2 billion tonnes in 2006. Much of the increase was accounted for by China, where steel production increased from 182 million tonnes to 422 million tonnes during the same period. No other country experienced such a dramatic rise in production. In India production rose from 29 million to 44 million tonnes in the same period while Japan and Korea both reported modest increases during that time.
As the world experiences an economic downturn, production figures have fallen. The 66 countries reporting to the World Steel Association reported a total production of 100.5 million tonnes in October 2008; however this figure represented a drop of 12.4% over the corresponding month in 2007 and a 6.9% decrease over September 2008.
