The World Titanium Sponge Market
China's net export of Titanium Sponge was 3738 tonnes in the first half of 2008. Domestic supply of Titanium Sponge changed from shortage to surplus during that period, which caused the price of Titanium Sponge to drop dramatically in both the international and domestic market.
The main markets for Titanium are the USA, Europe, Russia, Japan and China. The aerospace industry accounts for 60% of the consumption of Titanium in the USA and Russia while in Japan Titanium is mainly used in the chemical and power generation industries.
In 2006 the world's production of Titanium Sponge was 130,000 tonnes. Analysts were predicting a growth in production capacity to around 320,000 tonnes by 2010 and with a utilisation rate of 70% production was expected to be around 230,000 metric tonnes. Much of this extra capacity was to come from investment in new facilities by Chinese companies but it remains to be seen whether this new investment will proceed in the light of the economic downturn.
