Ferro Molybdenum from China

The major molybdenite-ore-producing countries are Chile, China, and the United States, which between them accounted for over 75% of the world’s production in 2006. Other significant ore-producing countries include Armenia, Canada, Peru and Russia. Molybdenite ore is roasted to form molybdic oxide which can be converted into ferromolybdenum, molybdenum chemicals, or metal. The steel industry accounts for the majority of all molybdenum consumed, principally in the production of stainless steel and full alloy steel.

The Price of Molybdenum and Ferro Molybdenum

The year 2004 saw a dramatic turnaround in the molybdenum market. The benchmark Metal Bulletin 'drummed oxide free market in warehouse price' started the year at around US$7.00/lb and ended it at US$32-34 per lb. Prior to 2004 the molybdenum market had seen plentiful supply and steady low prices. The price of ferro-molydenum also rocketed, reaching almost $US60 per kilogram at one stage, though, like most other ferroalloys, the price has dropped back quite dramatically in the third quarter of 2008.
