Ferromanganese (Fe-Mn or FeMn) is a ferroalloy with a high manganese content and is used as a de-oxidiser for steel. It is made by heating a mixture of the oxides MnO2 and Fe2O3 with carbon in a furnace where they undergo a thermal decomposition reaction.

Ferromanganese Grades

The North American standard specification ASTM A99 covers ten grades of ferroalloys under the sub-specifications: Standard ferromanganese (grades A, B and C); Medium-carbon ferromanganese (grades A,B,C,D and nitrided); and Low-carbon ferromanganese (grades A and B).

World Ferromanganese Production

China is now by far the largest producer of Fe-Mn with production more than doubling between 2001 and 2005 to around 5.5million tonnes per annum, an output greater than the combined output of South Africa and Ukraine, the countries with the next largest production. Much of China's Fe-Mn production is used in the country's rapidly expanding iron and steel industry. As with many other ferroalloys, ferromanganese prices rose rapidly up to the end of the third quarter of 2008 but have since fallen sharply as Chinese steel manufacturers pared back their production.
