Metallurgical coke is used to describe those cokes that are used in the steelmaking industry. It is the result of the carbonisation of coals or blends of coal at temperatures of up to 1400 K. This produces a macroporous carbon material of high strength with a relatively large lump size.
Metallurgical cokes must have a high strength to support heavy loads in the blast furnace without disintegration. and it is also used as a filler coke for polygranular carbon products.
The most important properties of coke are its ash and sulphur content, both of which are dependent on the coal used for production. Coke with a lower content of ash and sulphur commands a higher market price.
Other important factors are the M10, M25 and M40 test crush indices and the Coke Strength After Reaction (CSR) index.
M10, M25 and M40 convey the strength of the coke during transportation into the blast furnace as there are certain requirements for coke size before entering the blast furnace. CSR represents coke's ability to withstand the violent conditions inside the blast furnace before turning into fine particles.
